When Pearl first arrived, she was terrified. Not nervous. Not a little shy. Terrified. She didn’t want to come out of her kennel. She wouldn’t even look at the volunteers trying to show her that she was safe. She had shut down because she simply didn’t understand what was happening or who she could trust. And then, slowly… Pearl started trying. She came out of her kennel. She started exploring. She started trusting. And we finally began seeing the incredibly sweet, gentle girl hiding underneath all that fear. But Pearl is still timid. And every day she continues living behind kennel doors is another day she isn’t experiencing what she really needs—a quiet home, consistency, patience and someone she can learn to trust. We can love her. We can comfort her. We can spend time with her. But we cannot make a shelter feel like a home. Pearl is approximately 3 years old and believed to be a Red Nose Pit mix. She is dog-selective and hasn’t had a lot of socialization, so she needs someone willing to take things slowly and continue helping her build confidence. Please don’t walk past Pearl because she’s not the dog jumping at the kennel door demanding your attention. Look a little closer. There’s a sweet girl in there waiting for someone to tell her: “You don’t have to be scared anymore. You’re coming home.” Pearl has already shown us how far she can come with patience. Now imagine what she could become with a family.
